I have never really considered myself a dog person, but yesterday I attended the Dog Adoption Day event over in the Eastern Market neighborhood and absolutely fell in love with the dog I was charged to "handle" for the day. Her name was Charlotte and she's a 1 year old Chow mix. Such a beautiful and well-behaved puppy. I just found myself sitting on the ground and petting her. If only I could have adopted her! But there was one couple interested in taking her home. I hope it worked out. Unfortunately for Charlotte, she doesn't live in a foster home; she's currently housed at Wag Time, an animal shelter near the Convention Center. There were other dogs there yesterday who were also in her position, but there were some who came with their foster families as well. It got pretty crazy at one point, with dogs and people just packing the sidewalk where we were stationed. But the weather was gorgeous and everyone (dogs and people) had a great time. Jessica Sommersville came to the project with me and fell in love with her charge, Ellie, too. There was also a FAT little beagle mix (named Karla?) who Jessica also wanted to take home. I guess it would have made a good apartment dog: it wouldn't move around very much!

So, yes, I highly recommend this project to anyone who even remotely likes dogs. So fun!

District Convention (DCON) was this weekend. This year, the Capital District board held it at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Crystal City, Arlington, VA. Quite close to GW's campus! As part of Capital's 50th Anniversary, Kiwanis also held its Midwinter Convention at the same time at the same hotel. So, it was a great opportunity to not only mingle with our fellow Circle Kers, but also to talk to Kiwanians and attend more professional-focused workshops.

The following members attended from GW Circle K: myself, Angela Livengood, Tripp Corbett, Greg Nanni, Liz Abel, Alnawaz Devani, and of course Deirdre Clark who is also the current District Secretary/Treasurer. Other people we saw there included Orlando Carvajal (immediate past GW Circle K president), Harvey Jacobs (our Kiwanis adviser), and Brian Egger (former Circle K International President and DC Kiwanis member).

Friday night, during the opening session, we were entertained by a hypnotist. Some people got pretty crazy! But for the sake of entertainment, we all greatly appreciated it ^_^
Saturday, we all attended workshops as well as a business lunch where we were assigned tables in order to foster intermingling among CKIers and Kiwanians. The one workshop I attended where I got the most out of the presentation was Sub Region F Representative Kristen Reed's tips on public speaking. She went over common anxieties people feel about public speaking and ways to minimize those fears. She also taught us how to compose a short, to-the-point speech that won't put your audience to sleep. Thanks Kristen!

Saturday night at the President's Banquet, everyone dressed up and sat down to a great meal and listened to speeches and performances by Circle K members and Kiwanians. Our keynote speaker was actually the Kiwanis International President himself, Paul Palazzolo. But the highlight of the night - at least for me - was perhaps the "YMCA" performance by the Capital Kiwanis Players (members of the Kiwanis District Board). They dressed up like the Village People and did a very convincing act - albeit playing up their old age. Alnawaz and I even got our picture taken with them. So starstruck!

Sunday morning, Liz and I attended the final House of Delegates to help elect the members of the 2010-11 District Board of Officers. The new governor....Brian Cofrancesco of the University of Virginia! If you're attending the Spring Officer Training Conference at the end of March, you can meet him there.

Overall, it was a great weekend. To top it off, GW Circle K received the Early Bird Dues Award - thanks to our amazing treasurer, Cheng Tang! Also, Deirdre Clark received the prestigious Carthage Pullman Award in honor of her four years of dedication and service to Circle K. Congratulations!

Last week, GWUCK held it's annual E-Board elections and, thankfully, everything went off without a hitch. Well, for the most part anyway. There were definitely a couple of people who made up the peanut gallery!

There were no contested nominations, all positions were filled and everyone seemed very eager to take the reigns come April 1st. Elizabeth Abel will be taking over as club President. Joining her are Alnawaz Devani (Vice President), Susan Choi (Treasurer), Johee Chung (Secretary) - who ran off the floor! Thank you - Greg Nanni (Director of Public Relations), Brian Wong (Director of Technology, and Tripp Corbett (Director of Kiwanis Family Relations).

I am really looking forward to working with them this spring. As for next year, I think they're going to be a really dynamic group. I believe that GW Circle K will continue to be a great service organization under Liz's "reign." =D

Hi everyone and welcome back! It's the start of a new year and GW Circle K has had a bit of a shake up since last semester. I, Michelle Kulikauskas, am now the President. Eva Ceder, unfortunately, transferred to the University of Oregon. We definitely miss her! Also, Isara Krieger, our Director of Public Relations, has stepped down and Susan Choi has replaced her. Last but never least, Angela Livengood has taken over my role as Vice President of Service.
Everyone on the executive board is really excited for another great semester of service, leadership and fellowship with our fellow Circle K members. Highlights this spring include District Convention in February (a weekend event held at the Hyatt in Crystal City), a Career Networking Event featuring professionals from our local supporting Kiwanis organization, our annual LOST in DC "clue hunt," our Membership Appreciate Banquet and a ton of really great service projects. I'm getting excited just thinking about it all! And a little overwhelmed, but I guess that's the nature of things =)
So, good luck this semester to all of you. And I hope to see you at our next meetings and projects!
