Foggy Bottom Cleanup
By Angela Livengood
On Sunday, November 8, members of Circle K participated in the 6th annual Foggy Bottom Clean Up. This event was organized by the GW Student Association and there were over 30 volunteers from several other student orgs. Volunteers concentrated their efforts on the townhouses near campus. We raked leaves placed them into large garbage bags and placed them in assigned locations to be picked up later. We also picked up trash. All of this was done in effort to beautify the community in which we live and also strengthen the relationship the GW campus has with its Foggy Bottom neighbors. Overall, the event was a success and volunteers got to work outside on a beautiful, sunny day. Afterward, the volunteers were treated to pizza for lunch.
First Lady Presents Service Challenge to GW Students
By Michelle Kulikauskas
On September 11, First Lady Michelle Obama presented the GW community with a challenge: complete 100,000 hours of community service. In exchange, she promised to give the keynote address during Commencement on May 16th.
Since her husband took office in January, he and Michelle have emphasized on numerous occasions the importance of serving the community. In an attempt to get more young people to volunteer, President Obama has promised up to $4000 to recent college graduates if they choose to do community service for a period of time after graduation; that money would go toward paying off college loans. The President has also attended several community service projects around the city, including one on Martin Luther King Jr. Day back in January. And for her part, Michelle Obama has been spotted around the city, visiting schools, shelters and soup kitchens including Miriam’s Kitchen right around the corner from GW!
Although many of you will not be at Commencement, I think we should still take Mrs. Obama’s challenge seriously. 100,000 hours of service is totally within our reach because GW puts a strong emphasis on Community Service. We can set a great example for other colleges and universities around the country and we can also do a lot of good within our own community. There’s no such thing as performing too much community service!
AIDS Walk
By Lisa Mangiarelli
Four of our team members participated in the walk today: Jackie Lussier, Amy Paul, Olivia Richman, and myself. We met in University Yard and then took the lengthy walk down to Freedom Plaza together. We had a great time socializing and sight-seeing throughout the walk, and we also saw some performances before the walk. There were a lot of little tents with information and incentives, so we perused those as well. We finished a little before 10:30AM, I believe, then we went our separate ways.
Kiwanis family day of service
By Tripp Corbett
GW Circle K’ers partnered with fellow Kiwanis Family members from the surrounding university Circle K groups and Kiwanis Clubs this past Saturday in the Kiwanis Day of Service. The event was a great success, with a variety of projects being completed by the volunteers. Members had great fun making sock puppets for trauma centers, goody bags for sick kids, happy hats for cancerous patients, and trauma dolls to brighten up kids days. Keep an eye out for more events involving our fellow Kiwanians!!
